DSP Nurse Kris: Your (almost) Daily Dose

Maria of Louisiana loves to chew gum, but her husband thinks it’s annoying.  Are there any benefits to chomping away?

While I have to agree chewing gum can certainly be annoying when done with an open mouth, it can also be beneficial!

1)  It sharpens focus.  The thought here is it increases blood flow to the brain.

2)  It can curb cravings.  Gum can get a little tricky here, making your brain think you’ve already enjoyed a sweet treat and leave you feeling full.

3)  Gum can reduce stress.  The repetitive act of chewing, chewing, chewing can be calming.

4)  Finally, chewing sugar-free gum with Xylitol can help prevent cavities.  Xylitol prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth by neutralizing the pH of your mouth.  Chew it after eating and the acid that would be attacking your teeth is significantly reduced.  Less bacteria and less acid in the mouth means cleaner teeth!

Who knew?  I think I am gonna go grab a pack of Trident Bubble Gum!  What’s your favorite flavor?

    Our dentist just told us about the Xylitol. Must be the next big thing! By the way, saw your segments on KOIN, nice job! Hope they keep you!

      Thanks Nate, by the way– be sure to tuck the Xylitol away from your pets. According to DSP Pet Vet Dr. Greg Castle, Xylitol is dangerous for pets and can make them very sick. Hope you keep watching and reading!
