The other day I was lucky enough to receive a huge, glorious batch of fresh-picked blackberries and strawberries from my momma’s garden. As a joke, she asked if I planned to make jam? I don’t come from the “canning” stock and neither does momma.
Canning is a method of preserving food in which the food contents are processed and sealed in an airtight container. These busy days, the thought of sweating bullets over simmering pots of water, sterilyzing jars and all that business sounds like a nightmare to this Domestic Square Peg.
Then, the clouds parted and the light shined in my kitchen. It glistened off a bottle of vodka that happened to be sitting on my counter. The light literally shone on the berries and my heart skipped a beat.
I’d make berry-soaked Vodka and put it away for the Winter. Aha, I am a canner!
I simply filled the mason jars with berries, smashed them a bit and filled them with plain vodka. I screwed on the lid and was done in a matter of minutes…no sweating bullets, no simmering water or sterilzation worries. Just a feeling of DSP Dixie-inspried domesticity that doesn’t strike often.
I made a few batches of blackberry, two of strawberry and one of a combo. I added some lemon zest because I had them lying around. You can do any combination of fruits. Here are a few I thought sounded tasty:
blueberry, peach, ginger & cherry, green apple, cucumber, lemon, lime, jalapeno, green olive, pear …
Researching this, I came across some rather funky vodka combinations that will not grace my counter…cookie dough? Really? Cookie Dough-delicious. Vodka-delicious. Cookie Dough Vodka- nasty. On the other hand, whilst browsing my fave site from across the pond, Domestic Sluttery (don’t be scared, it’s a British thing), I found this recipe for “sluttishly easy” vanilla vodka. Now, that’s something I can get behind.
Is it Winter yet?
The 4th of July is right around the corner and this means three things: fireworks, hot dogs, and fun! I tried to combine all three into this easy, DSP-approved idea…Rocket Dogs! I saw this on Disney’s Family Fun website and … Read more
