Agatha of Michigan wants to know ~ if she can get whooping cough even though she was vaccinated as a child?

The quick answer?  Yes.
The quick solution?  Get a booster vaccine ASAP.
Everyone used to think the shots you got as a kid would offer a lifetime of immunity, but not anymore.  The Centers for Disease Control says that protection won’t last forever and the jump in cases of whooping cough (AKA pertussis) supports that theory.
The “good” news is if you have been vaccinated in the past and still get whooping cough, you’ll have much milder symptoms, are less likely to spread the disease to others, and it won’t last as long.  The bad news is, it’s still the whooping cough– a highly contagious illness that’s gonna to wreak havoc with your respiratory system. It starts out with symptoms very similar to a cold, but a week or two later, a violent cough develops.
Whooping cough is the worst for babies and young kids and easily spreads from person to person when people cough or sneeze, so get your kids on a vaccination schedule and if you are an adult, be sure to check if you need a booster– chances are, you probably do. And if you are about to be around a baby, keep in mind they can’t get their first vaccination until they are two months old– so, in order to protect them, protect yourself!
