Mission Statement

DomesticSquarePeg.com is an online magazine that offers sometimes hilarious, occasionally provocative and mostly useful information and tools for our Domestic Square Peg (DSP) community.  We focus on who you are, not what others think you should be.  From the DSP mom, to the DSP single, to the DSP stay-at-home dad and the DSP baby boomer, you are not alone.

In a world where traditional domestic roles are changing, we provide real-people reviews on products, helpful tips, plus opinions and short articles most everyone can relate to. We get the challenges of creating order in a crazy life.  With a little humor and a fresh perspective, we help make the chaos just a little more manageable.  Your peg will always fit here!

Besides being proud Domestic Square Pegs, here is a little bit about our great team. We are a group of women and men from across the U.S. with diverse backgrounds and interests. Some are stay-at- home moms and dads, and others work outside the home.  A few spend their days in suits, another in a hard hat and one in a chef’s hat. We have talented artists and a couple “should-be” professional comedians.

There is a public figure, a former NBA basketball player, an author, a philanthropist, a television news personality, an actor, a director and one total computer nerd. Many of us are weekend warriors while others prefer brunch and a great newspaper.  One thing we have in common is that we all believe in finding what fits for our growing Domestic Square Peg community.

Below you will find what makes our writers Domestic Square Pegs!

DSP CONNIE: Featured Columnist

(aka) Carol Thomas Koon

Documentary/marketing filmmaker, Baby Boomer and ever-evolving Domestic Square Peg. Tardy, a bit disorganized and easily distracted. DSP Connie’s passionate about everything from writing to music to nature. An avid weekend warrior, she loves outdoor adventures.  She’s an eternal romantic. Her cup is half full, her memory half empty. A committed wife, mother and stepmom, her family keeps her grounded (finds her keys, glasses, etc). She knows discovering the humor in every situation keeps life fun! DSP Connie believes that life is a process; a culmination of our blessings, our mistakes, and how we handle each.

As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live.

~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

DSP Dixie can bait a hook and get a mani/pedi in the same day. Irons annually and doesn’t sort laundry. Mom/wife/only child/friend/teacher/artist. Game starter, problem solver and trouble maker. DSP NURSE KRIS (DSP Kris): Featured Columnist

(aka) Kris Eisenhauer

DSP Nurse Kris loves people and all things positive. Sound Pollyannaish? Well, she’s from the Midwest after all– so subscribes to many Midwestern sensibilities, but maintains an East Coast sense of adventure. Kris is as comfortable with beer and bratwurst, as she is wine and cheese. She’s had her ups and downs in life including marriage, divorce and marriage…again. Nurse Kris is a daughter, sister and wife. She’s a mom to 2 daughters and a step-mom to 2 more girls. She deals with the love and tears that accompany raising children from ages 5 to 16. She’s had the benefit of being at home with her growing children, but now embraces the challenges that go along with being a working mom. DSP Nurse Kris graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin as a member of the prestigious nursing honor society Sigma Theta Tau.  Over the past 17 years, her work has been seen on CNN, CBSFOX, a nationally-syndicated women’s lifestyle show and websites such as parents.tv, better.tv and– of course, domesticsquarepeg.com.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

DSP LOVEY: Featured Columnist

(aka) Chris Love Dudley

She’s a grown up tomboy who loves sports, and a good burger. DSP Lovey will dress up when she has to, but glazes over and occasionally nods off when people talk to her about shopping, decorating or cooking. She loves to hang out with her husband, kids and dogs more than anything. She’s outspoken for a cause and doesn’t mind swimming upstream. DSP Lovey tries to always be polite, because manners matter! Look for Lovey’s Life Lessons, where she shares lessons she has learned from Mom, making mistakes, (There are a lot of them!) and a desire to bring back good old fashion manners and everyday kindness.

Life is not about fitting in. It is about standing out.

DSP Pet Vet Greg Castle: Contributor

Father. Husband. Step-father. Son. Brother. Sports Nut. Amateur Impressionist. Prankster. Adrenaline junkie. Goofball. WW2 Aficionado.
Well, it’s no surprise DSP Pet Vet Greg has a duffle bag full of hats and costumes from around the world, sets of fake teeth, mustaches and fake cigarettes that he loves to bust out to accompany him to a particular gathering.  He loves cars, fast cars, animals, mountains, limericks, alternative music that his family cannot tolerate. A Domestic Square Peg through and through, Pet Vet Greg understands that he has a million flaws and makes mistakes daily.  He puts his foot in his mouth, says insensitive things and acts like a buffoon regularly. Pet Vet Greg truly loves his crazy blended family consisting of his Spanish bride, four kids and lots of critters.  He doesn’t mind that his kids all get tired of him preaching the usual be humble, be respectful, always give 100% no matter what you do.  Pet Vet Greg Castle is a 1989 graduate of Oregon State and Washington State University. He’s been caring for animals since 1989. And in true animal-loving form, Pet Vet Greg loves and lives with two dogs named Romeo and Oliver, a cat named Rocky and a turtle named Henry.

Wherever you are, be all there.

~ Jim Elliot by way of my good friend Neil Steinhauer

DSP Pet Vet Greg Castle would love to answer any questions about your crazy DSP pets.

DSP BERT JAY: Contributor

Lifelong Oregonian raising a family and battling hipsters in Brooklyn, NY. A former comedian engineer (they exist!) who develops products to help our aging population live healthier, independent lives while ironically, he accelerates his own demise. DSP Bert Jay enjoys music, scotch, sports, and technology but can do without the ‘Real Housewives of Wherever’. A dad who coaches his kids sports teams but not his wife’s cooking. A husband who realizes that marriage is a marathon and there will be some blisters and euphoria along the way. A friend who has learned that relationships are the key to happiness, but you have to put the work in. Oh, and DSP Bert Jay likes mint chocolate chip ice cream, but who doesn’t?

Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard.

DSP COUNT RAOUL: Contributor

DSP Count Raoul eats white bread and washes his own car. This true Southern gentleman has made and lost fortunes, friends and reputations in Boston, New York and now, Atlanta. Children…. he has a few. His first wife Patti sleeps mere inches away for fear he will abandon her as he has most projects worth the effort. DSP Count Raoul’s been known to be “overserved” at corporate events but somehow always maintain his dapper demeanor. Although a caveman by practice, this Domestic Square Peg can whip up a mean souffle, and serve the perfect bellini all while dazzling the crowd with is world-famous napkin tricks.

A woman marries a man expecting to change him. A man marries a woman praying she will never change.

  DSP DAISY: Contributor

DSP Daisy is a stay-at-home mom who appreciates the little things, like having time to shower or reading an entire book. She is often dressed for a gym she rarely visits. DSP Daisy always has snacks in her car, even though they are often half eaten. She spends most of her days looking for a single pair of matched socks or lost sporting equipment. One day she hopes to style her hair, wear makeup and clean clothes for an entire week. Though life can get crazy she would not change a thing.

Parenthood: That state of being better chaperoned than you were before marriage.

DSP HARLEY: Contributor

Dork. Nerd. Linebacker. Husband. Father. Step-father. Coach. Student. Friend. DSP Harley doesn’t mind funny looks when talking to kids and players about honor, respect, dignity, and discipline. Is a HUGE fan of the lost art-form of “hard work pays dividends.” DSP Harley can instantly recall seemingly useless facts about wookies, meat marinades, cars, movies, football, molecular biology, deep sea fishing and pretty much anything or anybody covered in People or on the E channel. Loves his family and all of the kids he has ever coached. Is known to climb on a soapbox and preach about men needing to accept it is okay to lift weights AND speak knowledgeably on Clooney, Lohan, Ashton, Brangelina and the Kardashians. DSP Harley feels strongly that men need to MAN-UP and start educating their sons/daughters on life-lessons greater than how to download Angry Birds.

I’m a great believer in luck and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.

~ Thomas Jefferson

DSP COACH: Contributor

Husband, dad, coach, former NBA player and current business owner, determined, loyal, creature of habit, can see over the top of most people’s heads, bookworm. Believes that family always comes first. Works hard, plays fair, loyal and committed. Competitive (maybe to a fault), lover of knowledge, problem solver, DSP Coach believes strongly in philanthropy.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

~ Mark Twain

DSP Jack-of-all-trades has always lived by one philosophy… he says, “If my life were made into a movie, would anyone want to see it. I think about these things”. That’s why a guy from suburbia has stood on top of mountains, played football professionally in Europe, SCUBA dived the Great Barrier Reef, worked with Spielberg, sang an impromptu duet with Kevin Kline and been to the Playboy Mansion (twice).  It’s also why DSP Jack-of-all-trades has seven screws and a metal plate in his body. Not every story has a happy ending. Long stories short– DSP Jack-of-all-trades says, “I’m a lucky California-loven’ hubby, semi-stay-at-home-dad, chef, actor and author who is excited and ready for what life has in store for me next”.

I would not join any club that would have someone like me for a member.

~ Groucho Marx
